Request Description: This request is to help provide access to music education to middle school students who would typically lack access due to the financial obligation. Almost 40% of the students in the Hayward Middle School Band program play on school-owned instruments.
The school is able to help students with obtaining an instrument. However, learning to play an instrument also requires a student to have additional items such as the method book-Habits of A Successful Beginning Band Musician, supplies for their instrument care and maintenance, and some woodwind instruments require reeds and/or neck strap to play the instrument, all at an additional expense above what the school budget can provide.

Positive Impact & Student Benefit: Learning to play a musical instrument has its benefits! Students who play a musical instrument experience enhanced memory and focus, improved coordination, enhanced academic skills. There are also social-emotional well being benefits such as stress reduction, increased confidence, and creative emotional expression. There are physical benefits, and students make social and personal connections to music. Music is for everyone and all students deserve access to learn to play an instrument.

Grade Levels: 6th-8th grade.
